A wooden polychrome sculpture of St Francis Xavier hand-carved around 1762 by the Baroque sculptor Veit Königer (1729 – 1792). The sculpture depicts a male figure in an S-shaped composition, leaning on his left leg with his upper body and head tilted slightly to the right. He is gazing upward to the right. He is holding his left hand to his chest, across his flaming heart, while his right arm is bent at the elbow and slightly raised to shoulder level. He is wearing gold ecclesiastical robes – a long, wavy robe and across it a shorter, elbow-length cape fastened at the neck. There is a scallop shell on each side of his chest. There is a strap fastened around his waist, hanging in front of his left thigh. He has a rosary fastened around his waist, hanging down his right hip and thigh, and a pilgrim water bottle hanging down his left hip and thigh. His cheeks and lips are slightly red and he has short, brown, curly hair and a beard. The sculpture was originally crafted for an altar at a chapel at Novo Celje mansion. In 1951, it was gifted to the National Gallery of Slovenia by Fran Windischer. It was part of the same altar as the sculptures of the Immaculate Conception and St John of Nepomuk.
