Distinguishing Features:
There are wormholes across the reverse side and on the lower left part of his drapery. The original paint layer was removed and the sculpture was painted in white. Later restoration works removed the white layer and some traces of the original paint layer are visible. Marked damage and cracks are visible on the right waist, on the drapery on the inside of his right upper arm, below his left armpit and down the side of his body, on his left elbow and on the left side of his head. There is a hole on the drapery on his left side at waist-level. The tip of his left foot is damaged. All the edges are slightly damaged.
The wooden sculpture of St. Donatus was hand-carved by the Baroque sculptor Heinrich Michael Löhr (1700-1761). The sculpture depicts a male bearded figure leaning on his right leg and the left foot turned outward to the left. The head is tilted slightly upward and to the right. The figure’s right hand is lifting the drapery and holding it on his waist. The left arm is bent at the elbow and raised above the waist, holding a gold fire element. The figure has a gold belt around his waist and is wrapped in a drapery covering his shoulders and chest and falling down his back. The brims of the drapery are gold. He has a knee-length garment decorated with gold elements. The figure is wearing boots and is adorned with a laurel wreath and gold plume on his head. The sculpture is standing on a square plinth. The sculpture was originally crafted for St Peter's Parish Church in Ljubljana. It was later moved to the Diocesan Museum, and to the National Gallery of Slovenia between 1931 and 1934. The artist made the sculpture of St Jerome for the same church.
