  • Distinguishing Features:

    There are wormholes on the reverse side, on the figure’s head, on the skull and on the part where her left arm ends. There is a crack on the middle of the front edge of the plinth and on the right side of the figure’s cape at thigh-level. The paint layer is negligibly deteriorated and cracked.

A wooden polychrome sculpture of Mary Magdalene hand-carved between 1756 and 1760 by the Baroque sculptor Joseph Holzinger (1735 – 1797). The sculpture depicts a female figure leaning on her left leg with her right leg slightly bent and turned to her right. Her head is turned to her left and she is gazing slightly downward. She is wearing a rich, wavy gold dress and a cape which is gold on the outside, and blue on the inside. On her feet she is wearing brown sandals. Her cheeks are slightly red, her lips are bright red and she has long, wavy brown hair parted in the middle. She has no left arm below the elbow. Her right arm is bent at the elbow at hip-level and she is holding a skull with no lower jaw. The figure is standing on a square, brown plinth. The sculpture was purchased by Fran Windischer from the Antique Shop Tizian in Ljubljana. It was giftied to the National Gallery of Slovenia in 1933.
