Distinguishing Features:
There are many traces of repairs, fill-in material, binding material and replaced parts. The figure’s right wrist and fingers are made out of different material than the rest of the sculpture, suggesting it was a later addition, presumably as a part of the restoration effort. The middle and ring finger of the left hand have cracks. The fingers of the left hand are also of a different material. The middle finger of the left hand has a crack. The tip of the index finger on the left hand is broken off. The front half of the left foot was presumably broken off but was attached back with binding material. The entire right foot was presumably broken off at the ankle but was attached back with binding material. The laced brim of the tunic is slightly damaged. A piece of the brim of the fur cape is broken off at the middle of the reverse side of the sculpture. The entire right arm is attached to the sculpture, leaving a crevice around the cape at the shoulder, where the arm connects with the rest of the sculpture. There is a app. 2cm wide hole on the top of the figure’s right shoulder, with a wooden or iron dowel inserted inside, presumably to affix the figure’s right hand to the rest of the sculpture. There is a small, black curved line drawn on the robe, above the left foot. There are traces of brown pigment on the robe, above the left foot, and slightly to the right.
A marble sculpture of St John of Nepomuk, sculpted by the Baroque sculptor Francesco Robba (1698 – 1757) around 1737 for the monument of St John of Nepomuk located at the main square in Klagenfurt. The sculpture depicts a male figure in a kneeling-like position leaning with his right knee on a rock and his left leg slightly bent and turned to his left. His upper body is slightly turned to his left. His head is tilted downwards and to his right. His arms are spread to the sides. He has curly hair and a beard. He is wearing a long robe and over it a knee-length long-sleeved tunic with a laced brim. On top, he is wearing a short, elbow-length cape buttoned at the neck, with a fur-like pattern. He is wearing boots on his feet. The sculpture is set on a round marble plinth. The monument was removed in 1874. From the original seven sculptures, only four remain: St Sebastian, St Leopold (?), St Roch and St John of Nepomuk. They are currently located at the Klagenfurt Cathedral.
