  • Distinguishing Features:

There are many traces of past repairs, fill-in material, binding material and replaced parts. The figure’s right hand is made out of different material than the rest of the sculpture, suggesting it was a later addition to a damaged sculpture. There are cracks on the left side of the figure’s face, below the eye and on the cheek. The left side of the figure’s face appears to be made out of different material. There is a small spot where the stone is chipped on the tip of the left foot. There is a spot on the dog’s chest and left front leg where the stone was slightly damaged. There is a filled-in crack around the dog’s head, suggesting it was broken off but subsequently reattached. There are traces of green pigment on the back, left of the hat. The brim of the hat is slightly damaged on the lower left part. Parts of the brim of the cape on the figure’s left side are presumably made out of plaster and done as a repair attempt. There are fly specks on the robe, on the left part of the back side, at waist height.

A marble sculpture of St Roch, sculpted by the Baroque sculptor Francesco Robba (1698 – 1757) around 1737 for the monument of St John of Nepomuk located at the main square in Klagenfurt. The sculpture depicts a male figure standing in an S-shaped composition, leaning on his left leg with his right leg slightly bent. His head is tilted to the left. He has short curly hair and a beard. He is wearing a long robe and a short elbow length cape buttoned at the neck with a scallop on each side. On his back, there is a hat with a wide brim, hanging around his neck. He is wrapped in a voluminous, ornamented drapery falling behind his back. He is wearing sandals. His right arm is bent at the elbow and raised upwards. With his left hand, he is gathering the pleated drapery near his left hip, showing a wound on his right thigh. Next to his left leg, partially covered by his robe, is a dog. The sculpture is standing on a round marble plinth. The monument was removed in 1874. From the original seven sculptures, only four remain: St Sebastian, St Leopold (?), St Roch and St John of Nepomuk. They are currently located at the Klagenfurt Cathedral.
