A marble sculpture of a male figure with a crown

  • Title:St Leopold (?)
  • Distinguishing Features:

There are many traces of past repairs, fill-in material, binding material and replaced parts. The figure’s left arm, from below the shoulder, is made out of different material than the rest of the sculpture, suggesting it was a later addition to a damaged sculpture. There are traces of fill-in material on the left-hand side of the figure’s torso, just below the drapery covering its shoulders. There are spots of chipped stone on the top of its head, and on the right side of the crown. There are traces of green pigment on the upper brim of the crown, on the front left part, above the figure’s left eye. There are traces of red pigment on the drapery covering the figure’s right hip. The front half of the left foot was presumably broken off but was attached back with binding material. The bottom part of the drapery, below and to the right from the figures right foot was presumably broken off but was attached back with binding material. There are traces of fill-in/binding material around the figure’s right leg, just below the knee, continuing around the majority of the sculpture, suggesting most of the lower part of the sculpture was broken off, but subsequently repaired.

A marble sculpture of a saint, presumably St Leopold, sculpted by the Baroque sculptor Francesco Robba (1698 – 1757) around 1737 for the monument of St John of Nepomuk located at the main square in Klagenfurt. The sculpture depicts a young male figure standing in a contrapposto stance on his right leg with his left leg stretched forward. His upper body is slightly tilted to the left and his head is tilted to the right. He has shoulder length curly hair and a crown on his head. He is wrapped in a voluminous, ornamented drapery covering his shoulders and chest, falling behind his back, over his hips and legs, gathering behind and between his feet. He is wearing laced boots. His left arm is bent at the elbow with his hand in front of his chest. With his right hand, he is gathering the pleated drapery near his right hip, below the navel. The sculpture is standing on a round marble plinth. The monument was removed in 1874. From the original seven sculptures, only four remain: St Sebastian, St Leopold (?), St Roch and St John of Nepomuk. They are currently located at the Klagenfurt Cathedral.
