A marble sculpture of St Sebastian, a male figure standing in front of a log
- Title:St Sebastian
-
Distinguishing Features:
There is a small spot where the stone is chipped on the log behind the figure’s right leg, at knee height, and another one above and slightly to the right, on the figure’s robe. There are many traces of past repairs, fill-in material and binding material on the log. The front half of the left foot was presumably broken off but was attached back with binding material. There are fly specks on the frontal part of the robe, at hip level. There are brown/black stains on the upper part of the figure’s right forearm. There are signs of repairs with fill-in material on both hands of the figure, especially on the fingers.
A marble sculpture of St Sebastian, sculpted by the Baroque sculptor Francesco Robba (1698 – 1757) around 1737 for the monument of St John of Nepomuk located at the main square in Klagenfurt. The sculpture depicts a young male figure standing in a contrapposto stance on his right leg with his left leg slightly bent. His upper body is slightly tilted to the left and his gaze is directed upwards. He is holding his hands to the left side of his chest with the right hand on top of the left. He has short curly hair. He is wearing a tight, short-sleeved tunic and is wrapped in a voluminous drapery covering his left shoulder and upper arm, falling behind his back, over his right hip and left leg. He is wearing laced boots. Behind his legs is a piece of wood. The sculpture is standing on a round marble plinth. The monument was removed in 1874. From the original seven sculptures, only four remain: St Sebastian, St Leopold (?), St Roch and St John of Nepomuk. They are currently located at the Klagenfurt Cathedral.
