Distinguishing Features:
Parts of the brim of the hat are broken off in some places. The lower brim of the robe is chipped in the back-right part, by his right foot. The knot on his cord, below the waist level, is damaged. Presumably there was an attempt to fix it with plaster-like material, which was later also damaged. The fingers on his left hand were repaired with fill-in material. The big toe on his left foot was presumably broken off but was later repaired using binding material. The lower part of his left forearm was presumably broken off but repaired using binding material. The same happened with the index finger on his right hand. There is a dent in the middle of his chest, underneath his right hand, and a small hole in the middle of the dent, presumably used to attach a part to the sculpture. There is a piece of metal embedded in the top of his head, presumably a dowel used an attachment point for a metal halo. The bottom part of the cross on his rosary is chipped, and there were repairs with fill-in material on the upper parts. On the crucifix, Jesus’ right arm is broken off at the shoulder.
The marble sculpture of St Bonaventura, sculpted by the Baroque sculptor Francesco Robba (1698 – 1757) around 1747. The sculpture was originally made for the altar of St Francis in the Church of the Annunciation in Ljubljana. The altar was removed in 1911-1912 and the sculptures were transferred to the new church of St Francis in Ljubljana in 1927. The sculpture depicts a male figure dressed in a Franciscan habit (long, heavy tunic, a short cloak with a hood, a cord around his waist and a rosary tucked to his left hip). A hat with a wide brim is hanging on his back. It is tied with a string around his neck. He is standing slightly mid-step, with his left leg in front of the right one. His head is tilted to his right and slightly backwards. He has short curls on the side of his head. His right hand is placed on his chest. His left arm is bent at the elbow and he is holding a crucifix (later addition, made out of painted wood) at waist level. He is wearing sandals. He is standing on a round marble plinth.
