Subject:
a plaster sculpture of a female figure with a child
- Title:Madonna and Child, “Solčava Madonna”
-
Distinguishing Features:
Noticeable abrasions and paint loss are visible on both figures. The gold paint on the Madonna's hair is heavily rubbed and only partially intact. The gold detailing along the V-neck collar and the cuffs is heavily abraded. Chipping and edge wear are noticeable on the block-like seat of the sculpture. While the surface is heavily worn, the sculpture appears structurally sound, with no immediately obvious major cracks, breaks, or missing structural elements (like fingers or facial features).
A plaster copy of the Madonna and Child sculpture, known as the "Solčava Madonna," was created in 1960. The original sculpture was crafted between 1270 and 1280 by the Master of the Solčava Madonna for the Church of Our Lady of the Snows in Solčava, Slovenia. Today, both the original and the copy are housed at the National Gallery of Slovenia. The sculpture portrays the Madonna seated on a wide base with her knees slightly apart, holding the child Jesus on her left knee. Her left arm rests on the child's back, while her right hand gently holds his head, directing his gaze upward. She wears a long blue dress with a golden V-neck collar and cuffs. A red cape covers her head and wraps around her body. The child is dressed in long robes; he holds a scroll close to his body with his left hand, while his right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing.
